Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is becoming a form of treatment for many different medical conditions. PRP is blood plasma that contains an elevated level of platelets. The concentrated platelets contain many different growth factors that are responsible for accelerating a persons natural healing process when applied to many parts of the human body. Creating platelet rich plasma can increase the level of platelets up to five times more than platelet levels in normal whole blood.

Several studies are currently underway to find out if PRP can be a successful form of treatment for specific orthopaedic conditions. The American Journal of Sports Medicine recently published an article that stated PRP was a better treatment option for gonarthrosis than hyaluronic acid. Gonarthrosis is simply a disorder of the knee joint, or osteoarthritis. The physicians conducted a study of 120 patients with gonarthrosis. 60 patients received intra-articular injections of PRP, the other 60 received intra-articular injections of hyaluronic acid. Using the WOMAC score to assess the trial patients, it was obvious that the PRP injection patients scored better than the hyaluronic acid injected patients with gonarthrosis.

Trevor Booker was in Los Angeles to find out why his bad knee was preventing him from taking on LeBron James – the Wizard’s opponent this night in Miami or someone else on the basketball court.

“My knee was at a standstill and it wasn’t getting any better”, said Booker, who sprained his right knee during the time of pre season but has not made his appearance in a game since aggravating the injury in a loss to Indiana on November 19.

Booker contacted his orthopedic specialist David Altchek just like his teammate John wall did. His specialist David Altchek was the one who reviewed Booker’s MRI and ascertained that the best thing for Booker would be to have a platelet-rich plasma treatment so as to encourage more natural healing process.

He will have the treatment done on Monday by the Wizards’ team doctors and would have to rest for an entire week. prior to returning to any physical activity.

“Then, I’m going to start building back up, but I can’t do anything for a week,” Booker. who couldn’t offer a timetable on when he will be able to return. “ I think it depends on how my body responds and how it’s healing.”

Former Wizards Josh Howard and Rashard Lewis both had undergone the procedure to help with their knee issues and Booker had undergone two PRP procedures to assist him recover from plantar fasciitis in his right foot.

During the advent of this third season, Booker averaged 6.8 points and 5.6 rebounds in nine games, including seven starts. Booker started limping after elevating for a layup against the pacers.

Booker will not be able to attend his 12th consecutive game when the Wizards have rematch with the defending champion Heat, and he is out for an indefinite time.

“It wasn’t getting any better, so I expected the PRP,” Booker said.

PRP It has been used for over 20 years in numerous surgical fields to enhance bone grafting, accelerate wound healing and reduce the risk of infection after surgery. Tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, rotator cuff tears, osteoarthritis and chronic low back and neck pain are all being treated with the injection of PRP with the goal of regenerating degenerated connective tissue. Now PRP has also entered the domain of aesthetic dermatology.

This autologous method uses your own blood to produce “Platelet Rich Plasma” (PRP), which is enriched with platelets, lymphocytes and growth factors. When the PRP is reintroduced into your body (via injection) it accelerates the normal healing process by stimulating collagen formation and repair. This process brings long lasting tissue rejuvenation without side effects. PRP has been widely used for many years in plastic surgery, orthopedics, dentistry, and for both soft tissue implants and wound healing.

The treatment is fast and easy to perform. The dermatologist will draw between 10 and 20 millilitters of blood into a special glass vacuum tube that is included in the kit. This is a standard office procedure which causes no more discomfort than providing a sample for blood work. Following the blood draw, the clinician will centrifuge the tube in order to separate the blood into several fractions, thereby creating the PRP. The concentrated blood cell portion, known as PRP, is then injected beneath the skin in the area of fat loss and/or wrinkles. PRP can provide a gradual increase in skin thickness and vitality. Results usually become apparent within 15 days of treatment.

Typically, the majority of patients see their treatment results last up to 1-1 and 1/2 years. Subsequent “touch ups” may be needed to maintain the desired effect.

What is great about is that it is not just pushes your own production of collagen, stimulating regeneration to eliminate wrinkles, thus ‘delaying’ the ageing process, but it is also safe, as the plasma is taken from the patient’s own blood. It is so safe that can be even used under the eyes. In addition, as the plasma is derived from the patient’s own blood, it is also non toxic and thus cannot be rejected by the body. It is actually re-absorbed (by the body) in a just a few days. PRP is an ideal treatment for those who wish to have great results with no side effects, taking advantage of a safe minimally invasive procedure.
