According to a study published by the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) seems to be an effective treatment for chronic venous leg ulcers.
Venous leg ulcers affect nearly 200,000 Americans each year. Blood clots, aging, injury and obesity are common causes of acquiring a venous leg ulcer.
A physician and his colleagues from Ain Shams University in Cairo wanted to see if PRP would be an effective form of treatment for this chronic condition. Dr. Hoda Moneib lead a study that compared the clinical efficiency of PRP vs conventional treatment. The team from Cairo chose a total of 40 patients for this study.
20 would receive a weekly application of PRP for 6 weeks, while the other 20 would receive conventional treatment. The results of this study were certainly favorable to PRP. The authors concluded that PRP is safe and effective, while also noting significant decrease in ulcer size compared to patients with conventional treatment.
